I just bought a pair of these at best buy, mainly because they were only 9.99 each, and they're ok, but the announcing team they put on these is horrible! John Watanabe, and Dan "The Mouth" something, who has the most annoying Canadian accent you've ever heard, make me wish I could just have the original Japanese commentators back - and I don't speak Japanese! I think they were going for a record for incorrect names on the moves. These guys make Cole and Taz look like Gordon Solie.
But I did notice something odd, they spell "Mr.Gannoske" different, "Mr. Ganosuke". Now I know that's only a slight difference, but they pronounced it "Mister Gan-o-skay" repeatedly. What's that about? Are they right? I always thought it was "Gan-o-soo-kay" or something like that. Anyone know the answer to this?
Yes those americanized DVDs aren't that great in fact someone sent me a free copy of FMW Summer Tour 1995 part 2 (which is the basis for the americanized version of "The New Legend Dawns" or "Dawn of a New Legend" or whatever it's called) and the original FMW version is much better as it has more matches two of which I had at the *** range. (Kanemura/Hosaka and Tanaka/Nakagawa)
The TokyoPOP one are... well.. lets give TP a hand for trying.. but those DVD's just leave you hungry for more.. all the matches are cliped and that is quite annoying..
The ones I have are TokyoPOP, but they have full matches, except for one of the "bonus - DVD only" matches. But lord, those commentators are bad. "Oooooh." x50, plus a few - "Mike Awesome landed right on his melon!".
Rex Idol, the commentators were correct in pronouncing "Mister Gan-no-skeh".
See, i know the word may read "Gan-no-soo-keh", but in typical Japanese conversation, people just go "ske" as opposed to stessing out the "soo" sound in "suke".
Take "The Great Sasuke", for example. When the announcer introduces him to the ring, he will stress every syllable in his name. "Zaaaa Gureeeeehtooooh Saaaasuuuuukeeeeeeh!!!!". But then, normally, you'd just say "Za Guretoh Saske".
i wish they sold some in england tho, i've heard so many cool things about FMW and downloaded some short clips of the match, i wanna see it in full!!! *has paddy*
I bought all 14 of the videos through a comic book shop where I live. I had just started getting into Japanese wrestling, and they were the only thing available. I was working for a video store at the time, and had convinced the manager to buy a copy each of the first two for rentals. The second tape (The King of the Death Match video with Cactus Jack) was a red-hot renter, but only three people picked up the first one. Late at night I would play the videos on the store system, and a few of the customers would stand and watch ("Look, that's Mankind..... Hey, what's that stuff around the ropes?" "Barbed wire" "Can I rent this?" "Sure" KA-CHING). Still, I couldn't convince the boss to get the rest of the videos (the store had financial troubles, and is no longer there), but I picked them up for myself because I was hooked.
On the DVDs, could you remove the English-language track? That would be worth getting a player for...
