Cactus Jack/Terry Funk/Mike Awsome v.s Atsushi Onita/Masato Tanaka/WING Kanemure-Texas Street Fight/Barb-Wire vat(this was the fisrt japanese wrestling pics i ever saw.,,,,i was amazed...power bombs, fire, barb wire...i was in love...i oredered the tape and wasnt let down....)
Atsushi Onita v.s Mr Pogo-Barbed Wire Barricade Landmine Death Match-first death match i saw......special memories...i fell in love with Onita at that moment..
Hyabusa v.s Sabu-Sabu final fulltime match with the company....loved it...
Mike Awsome v.s Masato Tank-any match with these 2 is excellent...one of my favorite rivalries...
Megumi Kudo v.s Comabat Toyoda-No Rope Electricfied Barbed Wire-wow.........this match gave me a new appreciation of womens wrestling....
Hayabusa vs Gannosuke was always a great watch, Most of the Hayabusa vs Tanaka matches were 5 star quality as well. Onita's retirement match vs Hayabusa in the ol cage was a beaut
In addition to those already mentioned, there was a 30 minute draw between Hayabusa and Ooya(that doesn't look right, I can't remember how to spell his name) that I really liked. It had a slow, strong build and ended with guys being near death in the middle of the ring. Truly classic. I also saw a match with Kudo and Nakamura was that off the charts.
Anything Hayabusa related was generally of high quality, his matches with Tanaka and Gannosuke in 98 being hihglights for me. From a deathmatch persepctive, I really enjoyed the Onita/Sasuke match. I forget the stips, but I am sure it was something like electified exploding barbed wire landmine double hell time bomb deathmatch. Seeing Sasuke do the Sasuke special over the barbed wire had my heart in my mouth. He only just cleared the wire too...
Please explain exactly what it is you find appealing about Pogo. I mean, the guy can't work and seemingly never takes bumps. Not to mention that he never gets hurt AT ALL in garbage matches. I just don't understand the appeal.
Pogo is a unique character in the world of wrestling. Who else is like him? He's the most violent. He's intimidating with his array of weapons. He has a unique look. He's engaing and interesting in that he could be a legitimate super villain (albeit, a bit fat and immobile ). He's original and people like violence.
"Not to mention that he never gets hurt AT ALL in garbage matches." - I suggest you watch or review some of his matches. Remember what happened to Pogo when he faced Terry Funka? Also remember that his body is mostly covered by clothes, so we can't always see whether or not he's hurt or bleeding beneath them. Nearly every match involving pogo that i've seen, he's been busted open, juiced, whatever...To say that he never gets hurt is abusrd. He dishes out more punishment than he takes, but he often winds up receiving a lot of punishment towards the end of the match (see series/feud with Onita).
i think the problem in the pogo discussion is that Pogoscythe is probably referring to earlier matches of the guy. pogo was quite good in his day. I mean, he was probably as bad as Leatherface wrestlingwise, but he was as hardcore as anyone (i really hate calling people hardcore). but like so many garbageers, he burned out and now he's afraid to get hurt. (he's actually been for quite some time) but he used to be a real tuffie.
Yes, i was referring to his past primarily, because his past and present are obviously two different things. Now we have both sides of it. Waiting for third party to conjoin the two and postulate a clearer picture of the whole...
Pogo was good in his day, but his day has past, like all other wrestlers. Only a select few can keep their abilities with age, Tenryu for example, but the agening process quickens with garbage wrestlers.
I have lot all my respect for my namesake...there I would like to be known as WilliamsFan from now on...I feel disgraced with the name of Edge on me...
...Which i think BadNews did fairly well after reading his post for a second time. Good post.
"but the agening process quickens with garbage wrestlers."
Agreed. You can only wrestle the garbage style for so long until you cannot do it anymore physically, or because of hospital bills that you can no longer afford (are the wrestlers not covered by the promotions, even some costs and fees)??? The two exceptions that i can think of are Terry Funk and Atsushi Onita. But, at some point you have to slow down.
Yes, Pogo is past his prime (if one can even call it a prime, heh); but, i can't get enough of viewing his matches--even though i know what i'm going to get and see from pogo each time. Part of the allure of pogo is that he uses the same moves and sequences to kind of nullify critical thinking and adhere to comfort in sameness.

e.g. - "fluoride is good for you" - but that's a whole other topic...
I've seen the match between Hyabusa and Ooya(or Oya,either way,I like the guy)as well,he kept Hyabusa pretty well grounded and I actually thought he was going to win it.A good effort by both.
