My friend were watching a tape from the Yokohama Death Match Card that FMW held, all the matches were good but the one that caught my eye was Megumi Kudo vs. Shark Tsuchiya in a brutal death match. The match was a cool one, the explosives, the barbed wire, the fire all of it. The one part of the video i hated was the constant bashing of WWE.
Megumi was a fantastic wrestler both in hardcore matches and in regular matches but the match that stands out in my mind was the Retirement Death match she wrestled against Combat Toyota. It blows away any of her matches with the Shark easily. Quick question though ? Is there anyone out there who knows what the uber talented Mrs. Kudo is doing nowadays ? At one time I heard she was hosting a radio program. Any info that can be droped this way I'd greatly appreciate it
Kudo is also a reporter for Japan's Samurai TV station.
The Kudo vs Shark match from 4/29/97 was terrible. I thought Shark was far too careless with Kudo and she almost ended up killing her twice. Once sending her head first into the exploding barbwire boards outside the ring. The second, almost lighting her head on fire. This match was the ultimate example of Shark's carelessness in the ring. It's great if you're just watching it for the gore and sick bump factor but otherwise it's terrible.
The two had a far better deathmatch on 12/22/95. It was a no rope barbwire deathmatch that saw Kudo bleed like few have bled before. But she showed serious fighting spirit and fought back against Shark and her cronies to win the match. I'd recommend that one over the 4/29/97 match any day.
The one thing I hated about the Tokyopop tapes were the announcing by Erich Gellar and John Wantanabe.
The Megumi Kudo/Shark matches rocked. Exept it looked like you were watching Onita/ Pogo. Tsuchiya always has been the female version of Mr. Pogo. exept she can wrestle....Somewhat,
Quick question; Is Kudo still married to WEW's Hido?

In the last news report I heard about Hido (the report on the East vs. West show where he beat up female wrestler Ofune), it said that he was still married to Megumi Kudo.
Proud enough for you to call me arrogant
Greedy enough to be labeled a thief
Angry enough for me to go and hurt a man
Cruel enough for me to feel no grief...
However, I would like to say something in Hido's defense. I have the East vs West show and Hido didn't "beat up" Ofune. He didn't work her any harder than any other joshi (or male) wrestler would work her and reports were greatly exagerated. What happened to cause her concussion was a misplaced pile driver on a chair. While a careless spot, it really could've happened to anyone and it wasn't Hido just beating on her because he felt like it. Also after the match Hido realized that there was something wrong with Ofune and had a real look of concern on his face.
The only time the Shark and Crusher had a decent match was when they were paired with Combat Toyota against Megumi Kudo in the early 90's. Other than those rare tag matches I have to say that I've never seen the Shark or Crusher shine...........
As bad as some of FMW deathmatches are, topped by the worst commentary in wrestling history provided by Gellar and Watanabe, the DVDs are so entertainingly watchable. I think Kudo is right up there with Onita and Ezaki as the top 3 FMW wrestlers ever. Shark may not have been the best mat technician, in fact she was probably the very worst, but like Onita and Pogo, Kudo and Shark had some intense and very good, better than they should have been, battles. Check out the FMW Kudo comp. I believe she would have been a huge performer in any promotion, but the fact that she worked the hardcore FMW style primarily being as small as she was/is and fairly attractive to boot makes it even more of an accomplishment.

Some people don't realize this, but the first 6 DVD you can switch it to a Japanese audio track. I've noticed these tracks don't sound like Play-by-play but like guest commentary by one of the wrestlers. Still much better since you can hear the crowd.
The FMW dvds got progressively worse, with the inability to switch off the three most annoying annoncers in the history of pro wrestling, and heavily clipping most of the matches.

Don't forget about Tanaka.

Kudo managed to make herself a legend. And not only because she did deathmatches, but because she could actually wrestle. No doubt being camera friendly and in good shape helped her greatly, though on her ANTHOLOGY video in the begining of her career she was quite a little porker.
I've seen wrestling fans that are 99% against women's wrestling be in awe of the Toyoda Retirment match after first seeing it.
And what Kudo comp are you talking about?
I've been thinking about getting "FMW Megumi Kudo - My Best Fights" or "FMW Megumi Kudo - My Collection", but I'm not sure which one is better. (I'll probably end up getting both since I'm such a Kudo mark.)
I think he may be talking about FMW Joshi on Samurai 5/5/97. It's an extremely well done show highlighting Kudo's best matches in her final months with FMW. They've got her no rope barbwire deathmatch with Shinobu Kandori as well as the highly acclaimed (and deservingly so) double hell match with Mayumi Ozaki plus a few more. It's really well done, if you can find a copy it's definitely worth picking up.
