If you're looking for violent puroresu, three promotions are pretty recomendable. FMW, IWA and Big Japan all ran death matches. As for most violent, I'd say Big Japan. You can't really go wrong with a promotion that uses living piranhas in its matches.
Good Hardcore tapes? Son, I was brought up on Garbage Wrestling before my love of Puroresu ventured deep seededly into Strong Style and Jr. Heavyweight companies. I'll admit though, I still watch a fair few garbage wrestling tapes:
My recommendations:
IWA King of Deathmatches 1995: Simply for historical value. I think every collector has this in their inventory
BJW Scorpion Deathmatch: Matsunaga is great... Nakamaki's had it, but they're really innovative in this match
BJW Battle Planet Station: This tape, from SST, contains the barefoot thumbtack deathmatch between Jun Kasai and "Mr Danger" Mitsuhiro Matsunaga. Kasai is CLASSIC in this, walking on barbed wire barefoot. And the spots again are very innovative.... pouring tacks into a hat.... well, I'd rather not spoil it for you if you want it.
And GET the BJW Greatest Matches from Highspots.... it has every single sickening bump that made the company famous.. aside from the Fire Incident
The BJPW KODTM 98 was pretty good.
From the brutality of Mr Pogo to the crappieness of Kung Fu Lee!
It got good wrestlers too though, Matsunaga, Shadow WX, Honma, W*inger.
In my opinion, a great set of BJPW TV blocks to start with are the two surrounding the 'fire incident' (where Shadow WX was set ablaze by, erm, himself). You get the greatest garbage/workrate hybrid match ever in Honma vs. Yamakawa #2, a fantastic battle between two garbage legends in Kanemura vs. Yamakawa, plus a very good match between Abby Jr. and Honma. Plus there's the fire incident, one of the most controversial BJPW moments ever.
Yeah, that's the one. Just for the people who haven't heard about it, I'll explain a bit. Basically one of Shadow WX's trademarks was 'flaming attacks' (lariat with his arm on fire, diving body press on fire). In the final of a short tournament they had, against Mike Samples, he did his flaming body press through a table... but couldn't put the fire out. So he runs around the outside for the best part of a minute, fans running screaming everywhere, ring seconds trying to put it out, until eventually he gets his shirt off.
Amazingly, he puts together an ending to the match, ducking a lariat then taking one for the pinfall. Subsequently, I believe he was suspended shortly though for his mistake.
Is there anyway Hom3r can put that clip on here...I would think I would like to see that
"Life is based less than you think on what you've learned, and much more than you think on what you have inside you right from the beginning." -- Bret Hart
It's not that impressive really. I wasn't fond of the match, because it was a "lights out" match which means it is very hard to see what's going on. Also, the match is freaking awful! Mike Samples is so bad, and to think, in the tournament they had Samples go over Tomoaki Honma. Where's the justice in that?
Yeah, WX was suspended for it, which is pretty funny as it made it seem Kojika wouldn't want anything like that happening. Anyway, he wasn't suspended for long, probably just enough time to let his burns heel.
I would definately recommend that tape, I got it from StrongStyle (UK trader) and it is called, unsurprisingly, "The Fire Incident". Anyway, it has two Dai Nihon shows on, 1 - 2nd Jan 2000 (Yamakawa Vs Honma ripping it up in a fantastic deathmatch, superb stuff) and 2- 22 Feb 2000, which is where WX's human BBQ took place. Shame JR wasn't there with his BBQ sauce. Bah Gawd!
Forgot to add, if you want to see a really hardcore video clip, Weavil has the clip of Jado powerbombing Kanemura into fire on his site. Now THAT is hardcore. Kanemura is a nutcase!
