Welcome to the board man. And welcome to Puroresu!

I would first recommend checking out the "History of Puroresu" section of this very site - an excellent synopsis of all the major Puroresu headlines. It should give you a taster of who the major companies are and how they got formed, etc.

Next, I would go to Stuart's New Japan site - www.puroresufan.com/njpw - great site, with bios and so on.

Other than that, to really get into Puroresu, you're going to have to get some action on tape - it is the only real way.

Of course, any questions/queries can be posted here.

This is just a warning, newbie.....turn back now if you arent ready to commit. What does that mean? Puroresu is like a g----am drug. If ya get to deep, your hooked. Next thing you know your pawning everything you own to buy tapes from highspots.com. Your family scorns you. They try to make you go to rehab. This is the most potent form of wrestling 'bruddah'.......

Oh, and by the way....I'm just kidding welcome to the sight friend

In answer to your questions....Pride is not wrestling, but 'MMA'. (mixed martial arts). Wrestlers, boxers, martial artists all can be pitted against each other to see who the better man is. There are rules of course (its not some uncivilized barbaric war lol). All Japan or New Japan? That depends on what you like wrestling for. The 'competition' or 'the show'. NJPW tends to be a little more 'colorful' traditionaly, and AJPW is, well, AJPW. Theres really nothing to compare it to. Both are great imo. The best thing to do is get 'compilations' of great stars or feds for starters. My favorites personaly are Mutoh (as himself or as the Great Muta this guy is awesome) and Toshiaki Kawada. I also like Shin'ya Hashimoto, Jumbo Tsuruta, Antonio Inoki, Tiger Mask (the first, Sayama...by the way I recomend Tiger Mask vs. Dynamite Kid Tom Billington (from the UK) very strongly) Come to think of it if I name everyone I like I won't narrow it down for you very much lol. Also if your into garbage wrestling (hardcore) check out the IWA King of the Death Match tourny featuring Cactus Jack. I'm not much into hardcore personally, but it is entertaining every now and again for a change

Phew, glad Im not the only one who has done this. And Im being serious here, I flogged a load of PS games to order some Puroresu videos. And I would do it again if I had the chance!

Seriously though, it is a fair warning. You can get very hooked on Puroresu, moreso than any other form of wrestling. I often find when I do watch WWF, I am yawning or quickly find myself flicking through other channels, or even just saying to myself "That's rubbish." Puroresu, on the other hand, is just amazing. Sure, there are some not so good matches, but what you will find is that when Puroresu gets good...and I mean really good (like Liger V Otani, Feb 97) - nothing else can come near to matching it.

what is the japanese reaction to jumps

Just wondering what the general opinion in Japan is regarding the jumps of Keiji Muto, etc to All Japan? In my opinion this may end up being the most significant story of 2002,and could well rejuvenate Mrs.Baba's business. However,on a somewhat pessimistic note, would they be allowed back? Here in North America,it would happen in a second, but in Japan, respect still means something.

I don't mean to be pimping out my friend or anything, but if you are new to puro I suggest (of course there are many other good tapes and sites) you go to cdnvideos.com and look at the best of the juniors (lightheavies tape) and get super J cup 94 from whoever you can find it from. If you want the more technical, less high-flying style get some old AJPW

The other day I had to beg my Dad to let me use his Credit Card to get a tape from HighSpots. It worked though, and he said he doesn't care about having the money back!

    PRIDE 10, Come to Papa!

I agree with the guys, make sure you have alot of money before you get into puro because otherwise you'll do anything to buy a bit of puro goodness! Once you pop the fun don't stop. Prepare to live without food for puro mate! Because it may just come down to that.

Other little tips... I'm not certain if they are applicable in the U.K. though.

    Tape rental

In many area of the United States there are Japanese themed malls. Many of these places rent videos of Japanese TV shows. Some will just stick to news, drama, and vareity; other places have other things like anime, weekly pro wrestling shows or other fun programming.

I have managed to muster up plenty of different wrestling shows to watch. World Pro Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Noah's weekly show, they even rented and then sold me their previously viewed Pride 1-4, 6-8, Valetudo, Shooto, and even a bit of Arision.

I even got some interesting Classic Japanese programs with Rikidosan, Giant Baba, and Antonio Inoki during the golden ages of black and white.

It might not be a possiblity in areas where there aren't many Asian people, but look into it.

I'm not trying to take money away from the tape dealers on the net... I just want to let you know there MIGHT be less expensive alternatives to get some fun goods.
