Im a student in Canada writing an essay on my idol Chris Benoit. Im actually hoping to follow in his footsteps when I graduate highschool and become a wrestler. Ive got information on his time in Stampede but am looking for info on his time in New Japan.
All I got so far is that he spent a year training in a dojo and then wrestling after that. I know he had some great matches with Liger and Jericho. But Im kind of lost about his training.
Does anyone have any info on how training was at the new japan dojo?
As well as making my essay very detailed, Im also looking for info on what I can do to prepare for a career in wrestling.
According the Hard Knocks: The Chris Benoit Story DVD released by WWE... Chris Benoit was sent to train in Japan by Bad News Allen/Bad News Brown and didn't like it at first, he couldn't stand the food, couldn't understand the language and just overall didn't like the experience and he then went back to Canada and got to talk with Bret Hart and some others and they convinced him on the great opportunity he had and he went back to Japan and had a totally different view on things and was open to learn everything he could possibly learn.
I know this might not help much, but the day he met Eddie Guerrero, Eddie Guerrero knocked him out with an enziguri kick according to Chris Benoit.
I know this might not help much either, but in case you were wondering he also won the NJPW Super J Cup in 1994, beating Great Sasuke in the finals of the tournament and he was also an IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion beating Jushin Thunder Liger for the title and then droping it back to Jushin Thunder Liger.
I was training to become a professional wrestler earlier this year, but I quit and the thing I was mostly told during the training by my trainer was that the most important thing was the condition we were in and that if we weren't in a good enough condition, we wouldn't be going anywhere, because if we didn't have enough condition to put together a match, we could either end up hurting someone or hurting ourselves, so my advice would be for you to start working out and getting in great condition, so you won't get all blown up.
yeah I saw that too, and then I read about him not being able to get in the ring for a year. And all he was allowed to do is pushups, situps, and squats?
is that true? and was he really doing 1000 of each? I mean thats a lot. Im wondering if it is true was it done in sets or straight?
I've also read other stories where the dojo students were forced do all kind of demeaning chores, as well as the usual kind of hazing type things usual to most sports (carrying the older guys luggage etc...). How much of that kind of thing Benoit would of done as a foreigner, I don't know.
