Police: Wrestler resisted arrest

It took eight officers, two dogs and three sets of handcuffs to subdue Boulder's homegrown professional wrestler "Big Van Vader," who was suspected of drunken driving.

Leon Allen White, 47, was arrested Monday night on suspicion of spitting and threatening officers with rocks, resisting arrest, drinking and driving, careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Members of the Colorado State Patrol and Boulder County Sheriff's Office responded at 8:30 p.m. to Bari Court and Whaley Drive regarding a sport utility vehicle that crashed into a bush. The suspect, who suffered a cut on the head, left the scene and drove a block away to his home, witnesses reported.

When contacted by authorities, the 6-foot 4-inch 375-pound White told them he was looking for bullfrogs and catfish in a pond and crashed while driving home, according to an arrest report.

Officers reported White seemed severely intoxicated and had to hold himself up on the door jam. White became belligerent with officers when asked about his level of intoxication and said: "I will and can kick all of your asses! Let's fight ...," according to the arrest report.

Two of the deputies got their dogs out for protection. White stared the animals down and said he would kill them, the report said.

At one point, White picked up two rocks the size of baseballs and clenched them in his fists, Trooper Scott Hinshaw said. He also is alleged to have spit toward the trooper, but missed.

Eventually, officers were able to calm White down and he was handcuffed without incident.

White played football for the University of Colorado and in the NFL before becoming a professional wrestler. He has competed worldwide as Big Van Vader and held numerous individual and tag-team titles.

According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, he has two previous drinking and driving arrests in Boulder County.

Yeah I heard about this on highspots forum, Vader really seems liek he's uncontrolable at times. I really feel sorry for the police officers and the dogs. I hope this doesn't hurt his career anymore than his antics in the past have, I like his position in Noah alot I think since he is on his way down in the ranks he can really help propel some of the younger guys up by letting some guys go over. Plus he is still putting on good matches and at his age and size I find that unbelievable. So I wish the best of luck for Vader.

What I find great about all of this is that people in Japan don't really see what Vader did as being wrong, since drinking is pretty much a social event and there aren't strict drunk driving laws. The fact that it took 8 police officers, 2 dogs and 3 sets of handcuffs to bring him down only adds to his already legendary legacy. I would hope this incident would "propel" Vader back to the top so he can have last run with a belt before finally hangin up the boots, making him the only person to hold the IWGP Heavyweight Title, the Triple Crown and the Global Honored Crown. Of course, Terry Funk was as good as 53 as he was at 33, and if Vader can still handle 8 cops and 2 dogs when he has to hold onto the door jam to stand up I'd hate to think the shape he's still in when he's sober...

I don't know much about the laws on drunk driving, but at least in the eyes of general public, it's much more strict in Japan than it is in the US.

Drinking itself isn't a big deal, though.

I enjoy a drink every now and then. I have driven in my younger years at times when I had no business. But to even seem to be threatening to the police is beyond anything I have ever done. I hope that whatever demons Vader is battling he will win and get on with his life.

Yeah, you are nowhere near his size. I always find it amazing to see a wrestler among "normal" people. They always look ten times bigger than they do in the ring. I would have called for even more back up.

Vader should have Vader bombed the lot of em.
