HBO ran a special tonight about Mark Kerr that is well worth watching it's called "The Smashing Machine". They spent a year following him back and forth to Japan for his PRIDE fights. Mark Coleman is featured as well. Kerr was very open talking about drug use and at one point dumps them all in a garbage dumpster and checks into rehab. He had problems with his fiancee also. I have a ton of sympathy for him now he went through a lot in one year.
It is a shame when the media has to pick a guy who openly juices for them. I have no respect for him, and frankly have lost some respect for the organization. Vinny Mac wants his guys to juice...it stinks...I have two words for ya guys...Lyle Alzado (hope I have the spelling right). That the compnies don't crackdown is a disgrace.
That's a bit harsh on Kerr, Mutoh-Mania.
If there hadn't been the juice and the violence, a sleazy program like "America Undercover" would never have bothered with him.
I think Mark Kerr presented a truthful, candid and very human approach to a series of issues (the fight industry and its abuses) that go way beyond any one individual. From what I've seen and heard of him, I've never seen any reason not to respect Mark Kerr. Getting a little bit of insight into his outlook, I don't see any reason to respect him any less. He made a courageous decision and I wish him all the best.
In the end of the day, I think Minotauro has more fitness and is more of a true physical specimen than the Bob Sapps of this world. It's no surprise and it's good to see he's a better fighter for not having taken the "easy roid" to success.
I see where you are coming from and have to atleast in part agree with you. But the underlaying theme of my post I remain adamant about. That wrestlers/fighters feel they have to juice up to be able to compete for the few spots out there is a shame.
I watched the DVD last night if you didn't watch the HBO special then BUY IT. I got it from deepdiscountdvd for $14.97 but you may find it cheaper if you search for it. If you watched it on TV they used the same cut. I liked the way they titled and cut the chapters it helps with understanding the structure they were looking for. Extras feature 14 minutes of deleted scenes nothing that should have made the film but little scenes that are interesting to watch mostly training with Bas. They follow Ricco Rodriguez to a King of the Cage match and got some pretty good footage while it lasted. Ricco was kind enough ground and pound his opponent a few feet from the camera. A short scene about cauliflower ears and a little postmatch Pride footage round it out. They cut a good 34 minute featurette on Renzo Gracie called "Fight Day" that works well contrasting with the dark main movie. Director John Hyams ( NYPD Blue ) and producer Jon Greenhalgh (Kerr's college teammate) do the schizoid commentary. Sometimes they are really informative sometimes they talk about nothing. They talk about conducting interviews with Bas and Inson that they didn't make the DVD that I'm mad about. It took 500 hours of film to do this 1 1/2 hour feature by the way. They are really good when talking about the drug and fight scenes. This was a tough film to make a lot of work went into it give it a try if you can you won't regret it.
