Shooto? Any good?

Hey guys,

Just looking for a bit of info on Shooto, if possible. I've struggled to find anything much on it, I'm just intrigued as to what it's like, as I'm just getting into MMA after being a long time puro fan. Is it a worked shoot style, or actual shoot? Also, what kind of style is it in, something a bit like Pride, or more of a kickboxing/standing strike style? ANy feedback at all would be great, cheers!

Shooto is (to the best of my knowledge) the ONLY NHB promotion in Japan to have never done a work. They have less rules than Pride and the action is quite good. However, most of the fighters are like 5'5" 130. So if you don't mind that (my main problem is that the power isn't there... you won't see a guy powerbombed another guy from an armbar like Jackson did to Sak in Pride).

a little more info for you, Shooto was originally started by Satoru Sayama (the original Tiger Mask) after being forced out of UWF. It originally was ametuer competitions but as the 90's came it went Pro.

As far as the Rules Prides rules are more brutal as of PRIDE 13, Shooto cannot kick downed opponents and what not etc..etc..

I wouldn't actually say there is no power, alot of the shooto fighters are lightweights, welterweights, and so on, but don't let that discourage you they have power and make more of an exciting fights compared to big power guys who just ground and pound like Mark Coleman, Randy Coutoure and so on, many a times the shooto fighters finish the match very quickly if not majority of there fights are still great to watch due to all the action.

In Shooto you find great fighters like Rumina Sato, Hayato Sakurai, Momoru, Ryan Bow, Anderson Silva all tremendous fighters and there styles are crazy i.e. Rumina Sato and his Flying Armbar (Six Second Magic in those wrestling games lol) Also Enson Inoue (PRIDE), Kaoru Uno (UFC) all came from Shooto before fighting in there current promotions now.

Alot of the old Shooto events are great to watch also, especially the Vale Tudo series which they promoted.

Cheers again! Sounds like my sort of thing, it'll be something a bit different as well, seeing the lightweights going at it rather than the likes of Coleman and Goodridge. I may well order myself some in a couple of weeks then, providing I don't get MMA-burn-out no UFC has started on Sky in the UK (woo hoo!).

Sayama started Shooto(also known as "Shooting") before he joined the original UWF. After Sayama joined, he pushed his idea of Shoot perhaps little too hard, and that might be one of the reasons he didn't get along with others.

I've seen the official UWF rulebook right after Sayama joined titled "Shooting Rulebook".

Shooto describes itself as "submission from any position" and it lives up to its name. If you've ever rolled with a shootfighter(and I have) you will notice there style to be a little crazy. They will literally go for a sub anywhere they are with you on the mat. I've done a little and it was great! It also involves a lot of stand-up muay thai type stuff. All-in-all it combines the 2 to supposively make the "ultimate" form. Which as we all know there is no such thing or we would all be shootfighters.

Thanks for that, certainly an interesting clip. Its given me a better idea of the sort of size/build of the fighters, definately looks like it could be my sort of thing. Cheers again!

I think I saw something similar on a Norwegian station called Viasat Sport.

I've been researcing up alot on shooto but I cannot find a site with a good selection of shooto for me to order. HighSpots only has recent tapes and I want to get some of the older stuff also.

If anyone can help it is greatly appreciated.
