How many times did these two wrestle? Every time they meet did Brody always win until there last match and Inoki won? Just trying to get some info on this feud.
Don't know how much this will answer your question but I know that I saw Inoki beat Brody on at least 3 occasions (all in the mid 70's). I don't know how often these two have tangled though.
Originally posted by Samhain I know that I saw Inoki beat Brody on at least 3 occasions (all in the mid 70's).
Could you give us more detail on that? Brody never wrestled for New Japan until the mid-80s, and I doubt he faced Inoki before that at all.
I can only remember two or three matches in the mid-80s. One of them was a 60min time limit draw, but I can't remember the result of others. I believe one of them was a DCOR.
About the matches in 70's, I admit I am mistaken. I was talking with a friend and he informed me about my date confusion. The matches were in the 80's, the ones I had confused them with were Brody/Pedro Aguayo in the EMLL I think. My mistake, I apoligize for the misinformation.
When Brody wrestled INoki the first ime in April 1985 (at Sumo Hall I think), Inoki comes out with his left arm heavily bandaged and was clearly trying to portray at the beginning of the match that it was injured. What's the story about that. The first I seen of Brody in NJ was this match and a little video package they did of him before at his home in San Antonio training. Did Brody make an appearance before this attacking Inoki and injuring the arm? If not how did Inoki injure it?
In regards to the match I loved it although I've heard people say it wasn't good as Brody and Inoki didn't trust each other at this point and were not willing to give each other much. It just gave off an aura of a big match feel to it IMO. At the time it was a big match as Brody jumping from AJ to NJ was a big deal.
Brody's first New Japan appearance was on 1985/03/21 at Kourakuen Hall. He had no match. Just surprized the fans by showing up. Brody was in suits, swinging the chain as usual. It was scheduled that he would face Inoki on 1985/04/18 at the newly built Ryogoku Kokugikan (new Sumo Hall, replacing Kuramae Kokugikan).
Rest of the story may be an angle. New Japan tried to stop Brody using the chain because of the risk of damaging the wall and furnitures of the new building. Though New Japan eventually agreed to let him use the chain, Brody still didn't like it. Right before his first match in New Japan against Inoki on 1985/04/18 at the same venue, Brody went into Inoki's dressing room and injured Inoki's elbow. Inoki was said to be so frustarted that he was actually crying in the dressing room.
Thanks Hisa.
Is there video of Brody's first appearance in NJ on 1985/03/21 where he came out with the chain?
Also was Inoki's frustration just based on having to pay for the damage to the building caused by Brody or was there other factors as well? Did Inoki like BRODY AT ALL OR WAS THERE RELATIONSHIP STRAINED Right from the beginning of their partnership?
Just watched the Brody-Dick Murdock match from NJ last night for the first time and I have to say it was a wild brawl and a great wrestling match. At least Brody sold for him. Brody didn't sell for any of the Japanese wrestlers properly except of Inoki it seemed. Who was the main referee for NJ during this time? He refereed every one of Brody's NJPW matches it seemed.
Sorry, I found a more accurate info. It was Kourakuen Hall where Brody appeared on New Japan card for the first time. I remembered it as Ryogoku because I thought it was a larger venue than Kourakuen, but anyway.... I edited my previous post.
I would say the relationship between Brody and New Japan wasn't good from the beginning. Inoki even said that Brody was the worse person he ever met, and coming from Inoki, known to be a dirty guy, that means a lot. Also, on Brody's death, Inoki said something like, "it is sad that he had to die, but I'm not really surprised that he was killed by someone."
No, I haven't been able to find a footage where Brody came out in suits.
Very cool info. They had a great feud in the mid-80's. Years ago I bought a tape of Inoki's best matches and in it it featured Brody in a suit swinging his chain. I used to wonder what that was about, thanks Hisa. I know these two had matches in Japan but I think I seen a match from Hawai also.
Here is a list of Brody and Inoki matches including tag bouts the two were involved in.
Brody never worked CMLL, if he ever worked Perro Aguayo it would have been in Texas.

On December 11th Brody faces Seiji Sakaguchi in a singles match. It is said to have turned into a bad situation with Brody getting really rough with Sakaguchi and hurting him. The next day Brody and Snuka left the tour and boycotted the tag finals.
On September 16, 1986 Brody came back to New Japan and face Antonio Inoki for the final time with another 60:00 draw at Osaka Castle Hall.
So I counted 6 matches the two had in singles matches. Of course no one got the pin on the other in any of their matches.
